The University of Sri Jayewardenepura proudly hosted the Welcome Ceremony for the newly enrolled students of the Master of Economics programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The event took place on 04th August 2025 from 10.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. at the Sri Sumangala Auditorium of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, marking the official commencement of the academic journey for the new cohort of postgraduate students.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Senior Professor Shirantha Heenkenda, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor P.P. Rasika Perera, Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Professor Gamini Weerasinghe, Head of the Department of Economics,Professor B.W.R. Damayanthi, Coordinator of the Master of Economics programme, Dr. Ruwini Dharmawardene, Director of the International Affairs Division, along with other distinguished members of the academic staff. In their addresses, the speakers warmly welcomed the students and emphasized the importance of postgraduate education in economics for national development, policy-making, and global competitiveness.
The Head of the Department of Economics delivered an inspiring speech outlining the vision and mission of the programme, highlighting the opportunities available for research, academic growth, and industry engagement. The Programme Coordinator provided a detailed overview of the course structure, evaluation methods, and academic expectations, guiding students on how to make the most of their time in the programme.
The ceremony concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Mayuri Pradeepika, Lecturer in the Department of Economics, expressing gratitude to all guests, speakers, and participants, and setting a positive tone for the academic year ahead.
