From Pirivena to Powerhouse
Founded in 1873 as Vidyodaya Pirivena by Ven.
Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero, our institution was a beacon of Oriental studies.
In 1959, it attained University status, and in 1978, it was renamed as the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, moving to its current lush campus in Gangodawila.

USJ traces its roots to the Vidyodaya Pirivena, founded by Ven. Hikkaduwe Sri Sumangala Thero as a center for Oriental studies.
